Is there a method/command for editing file metadata from the commandline?

I think you can edit meta data on the command line. Have a look at the md tools: mdls, mdutil, etc. and the xattr command. Also check out John Siracusa's Tiger review on ars technica for some more info.

Most metadata (other than comments) is derived from the contents of the file itself; hence, to arbitrarily alter metadata, you must edit the file. Do check out SpotMeta, which extends Spotlight to allow arbitrary metadata.
