I am unable to repair my privileges & I'm pretty sure that the problem is that the BaseSystem.pkg has been deleted. The apple website suggests I copy one from another laptop using the same s/w version. However, I am still running 10.3.9 on my iBook G4, so finding someone else with a similar setup is unlikely.

I am wondering whether now would be the time to upgrade to Tiger. Does anybody know whether doing this upgrade would install a new BaseSystem.pkg & solve my problem, or would I still have privilege issues?

Upgrading to tiger will get you a new BaseSystem.pkg. Or you could just stop repairing privileges. It's unnecessary.

True. To answer the original poster's question though, if you really want to get BaseSystem.pkg back, you could just copy over the one from System/Installation/Packages on the install discs, then open up the package bundle and delete the Archive.pax.gz file (but not the Archive.bom file).

I do agree, though, that repairing permissions all the time really isn't needed.

Thanks for the advice. I am having trouble installing software & keep being told that I do not have sufficient access privileges to install. This is why I am trying to run the disc permission repair utility, at present unsuccessfully due, presumably, to the missing file. I'm not that hot on these things so maybe I'm going down the wrong route here. Any further suggestions that could help?
