I am selling my iMac which is running panther. I wanted to make sure that I get rid of all personal files or anything that has information concerning me. Any areas that I should look that are not obvious?
Also the customer's name is my name. How do I change this?
Boot from the system CD. In the Utilities menu select Disk Utility and format the disk. In the security options make it overwrite with zeroes (or if you are paranoid and have a lot of time make it overwrite 7 times). All your data is now unrecoverably deleted. Proceed with installing the operating system. When you see the welcome screen hold down the power button of your Mac to shut it down before filling in anything (the buyer shall do it himself). Sell it.
Don't forget to include all the CDs/DVDs that came with the Mac (system/bundled applications) so the buyer can do a system install and restore bundled applications himself when needed.
