I went into the system prefs and I checked the box so that my computer could receive faxes....it had the correct number and everything and the changes were saved....but for some reason, when my dad tried to send a fax, it did not go through. He tried several times and finally I had to hook the [hone line up the PC and then the fax went through without a problem. What am I doing wrong?

You're not doing anything wrong. Faxes aren't going to come through unless you have a phone line connected to the computer, although, it seems you've discovered this yourself.

The built-in fax software Mac OS X does capably receive faxes. They're stored in the folder path Users/Shared/Faxes as PDFs. Sending faxes with the built-in software is not nearly as nice (at least back when I tried it in 10.3); if you're planning to send faxes through your Mac you should consider getting Page Sender.

Things are a bit different in Tiger. and on the Intel iMacs.
the Intels have no modem, so you have to get one. Apples is a teeny tiny thing of beauty.
Tiger now just added faxing globally as part of the printing utility.
If the phone lines attahed it will send and recieve whatever can be printed.
Simple and sweet.
PS: I'm still waiting to hear from my DSL to see if i can fax over that,

From what I read I thought he had the phone line hooked to the Mac. I wonder if the modem was active in system prefs/network?

I am a she...
And I did have the phone line hooked up to the Mac, but the fax was not received. I went ito system prefs and enabled the receiving of faxes, but still nothing. THe fax did go through when I hooked the phone line up to my PC....the fax came thru to the PC with no problem. There must be some extra setitng or something that I don't have set properly. Is there anything else I need to do besides check the box that says faxes can be received on this Mac?

My sincerest apologies for not taking a moment to read a little better before I posted, I simply wasn't paying attention and meant nothing by it.
I can't say I have ever tried to sent or receive a fax, but it is something I have to figure out in the near future. Unfortunately I don't have a phone line at home at the moment. I did however try looking at the fax settings and I noticed that even when I clicked on receive fax button, it did not activate my modem in the Network Pane in System Preferences. I think it was on by default, and most likely I turned it off sometime in the past but it is something to look at. In the Network pane click on Show and look for Network Port Configurations. Make sure that Internal modem is active.
I wasn't sure from your original post if you had tried to send faxes or not. If you have sent them, then this typing is only in repentance for my oversight.

The modem doesn't have to be active in the Network pref pane, activating it under Print & Fax should suffice. At least one of the "Save to:", "Email to:", or "Print on printer:" checkboxes should be checked. If you have the "Save to:" box checked, the fax will be saved to the location specified there. You may have to check in that location to see if it has been received or not. Also, if your machine has bluetooth enabled, make sure that a bluetooth device isn't selected as your fax modem. Are you using 10.3, 10.4?
Another consideration... your fax modem (hardware) could be faulty...
