I was going to open one of the hidden folders, in the case "/etc", and I forgot to do the standard ⌘-⇧-G (command-shift-G) which opens up a small sheet where you enter in the path of the hidden directory you want to access.
By just hitting the "/" key it will open up the "other folder" sheet. This is a great timesaver for people who regularly need to access hidden folders. I have not seen it documented anywhere else so I thought I would share my find.

Only works in Cocoa apps, not in Carbon nor in the Finder. Pity.

Does the Finder even have an Open/Save dialog box? But as for Carbon apps, you are right, it doesn't look like Open/Save in Carbon supports sheets.
Not something I will use much, but great find.

Yes is does indeed look like the quick "/" shortcut only works in open / save dialogs in cocoa apps. Not that it matters much for me since almost all the apps I use to edit hidden files will be cocoa apps anyways.
I had to think if I had any carbon apps to try it out with, finally I found that POS IE for mac and the shortcut did not work. In carbon apps you still have to use ⌘-⇧-G (command-shift-G) to open that extra input tool.
