Alright, here goes.
I had 10.4.4 running just fine on my Beige G3 MT for at least a month and I decided I want to switch to the desktop case because it's smaller (I have 5 Beige G3's) so I swapped over the ROM (Rev. 3), RAM, 450MHz G4 processor, jumper block, and hard drives to the DT mobo.
I have one drive with 9.2/10.2 and one with 10.4.4. It starts up in 9.2 and 10.2 fine, but when i try and start up in Tiger (through XPostFacto, like I did in the tower) text will scroll in the screen with the apple, and eventually saying something along the lines of 'we're hanging here.'
I've tried zapping the PRAM, putting the drive on different busses as both slave and master to no avail. And it doesn't a DVD drive so I had to dmg the DVD onto a small internal HD. But the computer won't start up from that either. When I installed on the tower, it worked on the first try. Any help?

I tried a disk with Panther installed, and I got the same error. Maybe it's the computer itself? I've got a couple more desktops at home, I'll grab one this weekend.

Alright, I tried the hard drive back in the G3 where it was working before, and now that won't work either, same as Panther. Is there any other app that does the same thing as XPostFacto.

Alright, so it was as easy as unchecking the "Enable L2/L3 Cache" option and choosing the 10.2 disk as a helper. It's scary how many of my own questions I end up answering...I can't imagine how many more questions could be answered if those people that do nothing but whine all day in the Lounge would help another user out...

Actually, I don't think many users have experience doing what you are trying to do. I have never tried running Tiger on a Beige G3. The slowest machine I have used with Tiger was a 400 MHz iMac and conincidentally just today on a 400 MHz BW G3 (my friend's G5 is being fixed). Even the BW G3 is roughly seven years old …

Well I hope somebody gets some use out of this post. I think it would help to mention that both times I was using a Sonnet G4/400 processor, which probably made a difference in picking the
cache options. And Tiger actually runs pretty well, even with just 300MHz and 256MB of RAM (All my big RAM modules (640MB total) went to the B&W G3/450 I got for my girlfriend, gotta have priorities, right?) So I've got two beige G3's, each with 256. I think I have a spare 32 or 64 meg I could throw in the one with the two 128's...oh well. Anyway, Tiger installed fine, but on restart, it sat at the Apple screen with the spinner, but I had to leave so I haven't checked up on it. Any ideas what to do if it gets stuck at this point?

Nope, as I said, I have never tried running Tiger (or any OS X) on anything but the supported systems (I did try 10.3 on a Bondi Blue iMac at my job, etc.), but to be honest, if you have ever used a semi-decent machine (I run Tiger on a 3-year-old PowerBook), you wake up from the dream that it ran well. It works, but to run well, you need a different machine.

Exactly. The new iMac Core Duo that I use at the office has 2GB of RAM. It makes my five-year-old Dual 533 G4 w/1GB of RAM and an ATI 9600 upgrade look like a piece of junk. I don't even touch the 500MHz iBook any more.

I would recommend looking into a Mac mini to replace that beige G3... you might be astounded at the difference a few hundred bucks can make. But keep in mind that a low-end Mac mini is just a little bit better than this G4 I use at home.

Sorry, I guess I'll make my usage a tad more clear. My main machine is an iBook, 1.33/768MB. I bought four beige G3 desktops for a total of around $7 to play around with. So none of them are my main machines, just stuff I play around with. I'm hoping to get two of them plus my beige tower running Predictor again. I was #18 for team MacNN with just the Tower and my iBook for a while.

Ditto. Until recently I was using a G3 800 MHz iBook. The machine had some stability issues (plus a broken trackpad and a keyboard with an attitude). The step up to the PowerBook was a huge improvement already, but it still feels slow at times. Makes me think how I managed to put with the iBook for such a long time. Once you get spoilt, there is no way back

Fortunately, my university has placed an order for a MacBook Pro already

You may do better getting a light-weight Linux installation installed on the machines. On the other hand, you may not.
