I *just* got delivery of my new 20" Duo Core iMac today and I'm already having a weird problem with it. I've searched though apple's support pages and the forums here and found this. but it's a slightly different problem than mine.

On my desktop, I can only see the folders I placed there... no files. Same thing in the finder - only folders and no files. I know the files are there though, because I can see them via the finder if I'm logged into the machine from another computer. I can also see them via the command line:

Code:
Risotto:~/Desktop steph$ ls -al total 528 drwx------ 13 steph steph 442 Feb 3 18:50 . drwxr-xr-x 13 steph steph 442 Feb 3 23:28 .. -rw------- 1 steph steph 12292 Feb 3 19:06 .DS_Store -rw-r--r-- 1 steph steph 0 Feb 3 23:24 .localized drwxr-xr-x 8 steph steph 272 Feb 3 16:33 Address Book - 2:3:06.abbu drwxr-xr-x 29 steph steph 986 Feb 3 18:50 Downloads -rwxr-xr-x 1 steph steph 54204 Feb 3 16:32 Home.ics -rwxr-xr-x 1 steph steph 186710 Mar 27 2003 OS X booklet.pdf -rwxr-xr-x 1 steph steph 5739 Feb 3 16:32 School.ics drwxr-xr-x 26 steph steph 884 Feb 3 09:14 Temp Docs drwxr-xr-x 18 steph steph 612 Jan 30 21:50 iPhoto Library drwxr-xr-x 11 steph steph 374 Feb 3 18:29 pics drwxr-xr-x 17 steph steph 578 Jan 25 08:34 vid

What the hell? Is it some weird setting that's been turned on or is this thing cursed?

(btw, if you want a new imac, order it from amazon before february 7th. their $150 rebate + no sales tax saved me $200 over the _educational_ price - the whole thing cost me $1500, after rebate. and they even gave me next day shipping for $4 for signing up for a free trial of their amazon prime program.)

Try switching the screen resolution. Maybe that pushes them into view.

If that doesn't help, I would - since it's brand new - do a complete reinstall of the operating system including formatting the disk.

they're not showing up in the finder window either... I don't think it's the resolution.
