Hi Y'all,

Under system preferences - "users" - "accounts" - how can I change the "short name" of an existing account? And can I decrease the sound of the of the computer on start-up. Under "sound" - output - it says that there are no controls for the selected output?

Is censoring words that you wouldn't expect to be censored the new thing here at MacNN or something?

Ticking sound coming from a .pkg package? Don't let the .bom go off! Inspect it first with Pacifist. Macworld - five mice!

"unt" is a word?

As for the startup chime volume, I tend to keep something plugged into one of the headphone jacks.

Since I see four letters censored, I assume he hit "c" one time too many by accident.

I've used this for quite a while now, and it does the job nicely. I still don't know why Apple didn't include this in Os X....

I could cut and paste in the whole list, but then all you'd see is a sea of asterisks!

Seriously, the censorship list contains swear words, vulgarities, the names of some common web images that we don't want shown (you'd agree), and the URLs of free iPod sites and the like.

Thanks for the info, this is a great resource and it's great to chat with fellow "mac freaks". Though, I think I will live with my current short name and just plug in something into the headphone jack. The solutions are just a bit too "techy" for me. Thanks anyway.

Well, if you look at the page Detrius linked to, the first post contains a link to a GUI app to change the short name. So it becomes a not-incredibly-techy project. It's still a bit scary, since the documentation that comes with said app contains many all-caps warnings about how it's unsupported and could totally hose your Mac. I keep thinking about using it for my girlfriend's account on my PowerBook (she took over a more generic anybody-but-me user), but it's scary.

The solution for startup sound volume is really not that bad, though. Just double-click the .pkg and it'll show up in your System Preferences. Drag it out of /Library/PrefPanes to uninstall if you don't like it..
