My research is complete. Even Mac's own support
page says " To remove items from the Dock, just
drag them to the Desktop". Yeah, rrr-i-g-g-hhht-t-t!!
;-) ;-( As Clouseau would say, "Good one!!"
But seriously, there are a couple of .jpgs and a
document or two that simply WILL NOT GO! So I
am begging..no, pleading...(Ok, politely
requesting) your H-E-L-PPPP!!!!! Thanks for
playing along :-) (No, really.)

Have you tried restarting?

I don't know how they got there. If I click on them, they open. One was even deleted from the hard drive but it's still in the Dock! Restarting makes no difference. Usually, like on a PC, you would be able to go to a folder that contains the "Dock Items". There apparently is no Dock Folder on a Mac. Quite frustrating...

If they are minimized to the dock, they wont be removed until you close them or the program that has them open.

Here's what you do:

Start up Activity Monitor.
Close all your other apps. The Dock should only show the Finder and Activity Monitor as being active.

Now drag the com.apple.dock.plist file from your library/preferences folder to the Trash (or save it somewhere if you have a lot of customizations done).

Kill the Dock via Activity Monitory. It should be reset to it's default state. If you saved the old Dock preferences you can drag it back into your library/preferences folder and kill the Dock again. If anything in the Dock shows a "?", drag it out of the Dock.

Interesting concept... Why DO they behave differently?

because if they exploded when you dragged them off you would loose all the data in the window.

Anything that contains data or is a running app cannot be dragged off the dock,

posterperson didn't grasp this behaviour, in fact, none of us did without reading about it / playing around with it. Here's the spooky part: People afraid of computer don't "play around". If they can't guess an object's affordances by observing it, they seldom choose to interact with it.

Now, should Apple design for them, or for the "pro-users"?

(In this particular case, I'd say Apple designed for neither :> )
