My wife has to type a paper in Spanish, which means the tilde over the Ns and such. We tried to open international and click on different settings, but nothing is working. Can someone walk me through this so that when she types her papers the accents will appear over the appropriate letters. The shortcuts aren't working either.

Thanks

If your wife knows how to touch-type on a Spanish keyboard, then open the International system preferences and click the "Input Menu" tab. There you enable the "Spanish" keyboard. Now you see a little flag in the top right of the menu bar (which currently is probably an American one). Switch to the program you want to write your text, then click the flag and switch to the Spanish keyboard. Now you can type like a Spaniard would on a Spanish keyboard. If you don't know for sure where the characters are on that keyboard you can also enable the "Keyboard Viewer" in the Input Menu preferences. Then click on the flag in the menu bar and show the "Keyboard Viewer". It displays a keyboard and what keys to press for which character.

If your wife doesn't know how to touch type on a Spanish keyboard it might be better to stick with the US keyboard layout. In the US keyboard layout you can get the ñ by typing option-n and then n. You can get the accent by typing option-e and then the character you want it to be on. And I think those are all special characters in Spanish.

¡ is option-1 and ¿ is shift-option-/ with the US keyboard layout.
