I picked up an old G3 266 and would like to try Linux on it. What should I go for?

Instead of Linux, why not Tiger using Xpostfacto?

Uhm, maybe because it either isn't supported or runs too slowly?

You could install Ubuntu and then run one of the lightweight window managers, like XFCE.

I tried to install Ubuntu on my G3 Beige with G4 500 ZIF.
It failed.
I couldn't boot the Live CD on my PowerMac Dual G5 1.8 either. (memory error - I have 2GB of good RAM)
However,Installing it on an Imac G3 350 was successful.
