In OS 9, you used to hold the Option key down when selecting "Empty Trash" and *locked* files would be removed permanently. So, what's the key combination in OS/X. I've already tried "Option>Empty Trash"--that isn't it.

Actually option-empty DOES delete locked files on OSX.
Maybe your files are "locked" in the ordinary sense.
They may be owned and/or protected by the system.
Or -- if you do own them -- they may be 'busy'.
(try restarting).
