NO, since OS X memory mgmt is light years ahead of earlier OS versions.
Essentially your entire HD(s) is/are one big ram disk, through the Virtual memory system, even though it is slower than actual ram per se, the differences in the newer technology in OS x make up for ALOT of the speed penalty that VM caused in OS 9 & earlier
