Recipe

Take one spotlight search. Add a search for thumbs.db. (Windows files that I wanted to get rid of as I was importing my Photos.) Click on show all. Highlight all thumb.db files and Drag to trash. Sprinkle with iPod doing first time sync in the background. Let simmer.

A KP on my second day with OS X. Yesterday I had finder Bomb on me. Literally the bar at the top of the screen went poof and all I could see was the shadow. (Think I figured that one out. OS X occasionally doesn't like my SanDisk flash drive. (The thing even keep the OS from shutting down. I only figured that out when I yanked the drive (couldn't eject.) and the system finally rebooted.
I’m not impressed so far. Up til now Windows and I had at least a working relationship. I slapped it around, occasionally fed it a patch and it behaved. Others had/have issue with Windows and I never could understand what the big deal was. I hope that relationship isn't forming between me and OS X.

Say what you will about 2K and XP...so far it seems like those are more fault tolerant then OS X. Then again it may also be the case that I simply know not to poke that aspect of the OS with a stick and to leave it alone. Don't know as much with X.

PS- Yes I’ve fixed permissions. Nothing overly wonky when it comes to installed “stuff”

Run the hardware test & check your RAM. Could be faulty. Generally, kernel panics are hardware-related. Could also be a hardware prob. with that San Disk drive. You might want to run disk utility on it, and see if it's corrupt.

The thumbs.db files are the system's databases of the image previews that you see on your image files when viewing them in the Finder - you will find them in every folder on your Mac (if you have hidden files on show) that contains any images. Not a very sensible thing to be deleting and especially so when doing it that way.

I thought the thumbs.db was a Windows only file. I don't have show hidden files turned on. At this point with my limited experience I'm assuming what Apple doesn't want to show me I shouldn't be touching.

I don't assume he's been browsing every folder of his Mac with a Windows computer…

I'm still in denial of the name...I've been using it more frequently but I continue to slip into the PowerBook moniker mode.

PS- Someone should put a warning on the outside of all Macs. Garageband is WAY too addicting.

No they are not. Those are Windows tumbnail-files. The Finder creates the icon previews on the fly only. You don't need those files on a Mac.

TETENAL is right, thumbs.db is the windows file for when you view a folder in thumbnail or some view like that. The one you are thinking for Mac OS is the .ds_store files.
