Putty. Beware it's odd cut / paste technique. (highlight automatically cuts, right click or shift-insert pastes). Free.

pretty much.
ssh user@ipaddress
Are you using a router at home, or is your computer the only one connected to your ISP? If you've got a router, you'll need to be forwarding the port to access your computer.

Yeah, Port 22 is the default SSH. Most routers have a configuration system as a webpage. Login to that, and forward port 22 to the LAN IP for the computer you're trying to access. Then you're set.

awesome, thanks. oh, and one more question, is the ip number that i am trying to access the LAN ip, or the static ip of the router? for example, will it be: ssh derek@(LAN number) or ssh derek@(static WAN router IP)?
thanks

You're wanting to access the IP address of the router, which is what will show up when you access a site like http://www.myipaddress.com/ from your home machine. The router will then forward that to your Mac if you've set it up properly.

Someone has posted a fantastic step by step video showing how to use your Mac remotely from a PC:
http://howto.diveintomark.org/remote-mac/
It covers most of the issues here, as well as how to use a VNC client and server through the SSH tunnel. Good references also.
p.s. I found this link at del.icio.us which, for those who arent familiar, is a great place to browse:
