Recently installed latest retail version of Tiger on my Pismo Powerbook. Install
went fine. Tiger runs better than I thought on the Pismo. No complaints.
I did a complete erase & install on the internal Pismo drive. Before I did this of course
I backed up everything to an external firewire Seagate drive i.e., applications folders,
system folder, anything I thought I may need to recover. Before I upgraded to Tiger
I was running OS 9.1. Problem I'm having is that each time I try to open an
application that needs the Classic enviroment I get no where. Get that window that
says Classic is starting and the progress bar, and a window with the Mac OS 9.1 as it use
to appear when I would start up the system prior to upgrade. Does Tiger need OS 9.2 or later
to open up apps in Classic? As is stands now I can't get pass the "starting up classic" step.
Any thoughts appreciated.

Not sure about the minimum version, but it definitely sounds like that one's not quite working. I think there's a 9.2.1 installer on the Tiger install DVD. Try using that.

What do you mean 'can't get past it'? Does it load then disappear? If so, try opening a Classic app afterwards and see if it runs. Classic is meant to run in the background so you barely notice it's there.

Classic starts to open then just stalls. I get a window that says "classic is starting" you see the
progress bar start to indicate activity....then just stalls completely. Looks like Classic is going to
the firewire drive and trying to install from the old 9.1 system folder. Should it do that, even though the internal Pismo drive is the start up disk. I'll have to look on the Tiger install DVD
to see if there is a 9.2.1 installer.

The Tiger install DVD doesn't have an OS 9 installer on it, unless it's one of the DVDs that came with your computer.

If you go into the Classic Preference Pane, click the Advanced tab, and try to start Classic with extensions off, what happens?

I only had one Tiger DVD in the retail package I purchased. Went to preference pane, to advanced tab, extensions off, clicked "start classic". Same thing I've been getting. A message that says
"starting classic". progress bar with just a hint of progress noted, and the Mac OS 9.1 window
noting "extension off". Thats as far as I get. I was able to go to the Start Up disk utility and select the OS 9 folder from the firewire drive, do a restart and boot into OS 9.1 from that drive.

I had this problem on my Dual G5 once. Classic would stall at the same point each time when trying to load. Reinstalling it fixed the problem.

1. OS X has required 9.2.1 or later for Classic support for some time. If you're running 9.1 it should warn you about that.

2. Sometimes Classic will not launch successfully. It's usually because of an extension tripping it up. If this is the first time you've tried to use Classic, and if you're using the same Classic System Folder that you used when you were running OS 9, chances are great that it will fail. Go into the Classic pane of System Preferences, click on the Advanced tab and choose to start with the OS 9 extension manager. When the extension manager is shown, select only OS 9.2 base.
