I have both an iMac CD, and an iBook G4, and until today, all was well, and I could print to my HP 5740 using my iMac via USB, and my iBook over wireless. But today, it wont print, and when I click print, it automatically stops the jobs in the print utility that pops up, and it does the same if i press start jobs. I know it is not the printer, as I can go into the printer utility on either mac, and print a test page. I know it is not the printer because I have tried moving my iBook around the house to varous USB printers, none of which it will print to.

What gives?!

Cheers

I assume you have deleted the printer and re-installed it, correct?

yep I have tried that. The thing that gets me is that it is both my iMac and my iBook that is affected (I have tried my iBook via USB to the printer with no results)

Oh no, the horrid printer virus strikes the Mac.

That's pretty odd that even a direct USB connection after driver reinstallation won't work. Are you saying your PCs are printing fine?

It sounds like you're printing at least partially via a wireless network, correct? This sometimes happens to me -- and even the computer hooked up directly to my airport extreme is affected. It happens when someone closes the laptop lid while the job is being sent to the printer. Or, it happened last week when the battery power abruptly ran out while the job was being sent to the printer.

HEre's my solution, which works: unplug the airport extreme, wait a few minutes and then plug it back in. It has worked for me at least twice in the past month. If you're not using airport extreme, then unplug whatever is the hub.

Let me know if it works.

Nope, tried that, doesnt make a difference, but it wouldn't seeing as my printer is not connected to my wireless access point, but directly to my iMac via USB.

This is SO frustrating!

OK I tried deleting the printer off of my macs, and then shoved the install CD into both macs to install the printers, and guess what, it worked!

I know I know this seems totally dumb that i didnt try this before, but I didnt for 2 reasons:

a) I didnt have to use the install CD when I first got the printer, it just plugged and played
b) I guessed the disc wouldn't work on my new Core Duo, as the driver would be a PPC version, but turned out that didnt seem to matter

Still doesn't explain why both macs stopped talking to the printer at the same time though...
