I have had a problem for a while now that most of the time the spotlight button in my menu bar doesn't work. When I click on it nothing happens at all. When I hit command-space bar the spotlight icon in the menu bar goes blue but no search window comes up. To use spotlight I have to hit command-apple-space bar to get the spotlight window to come up.

I have tried re-indexing spotlight which does fix the problem temporarily and then it reverts to the above. Restarting does not fix the problem.

Has anyone had this? Does anyone have a fix or any ideas?

Try trashing the systemuiserver's preference file.

Have you recently installed any hacks?

No hacks.

Using the utility YASU, it began to work, but the next morning (today) it's not working again.

I then took Tetenal's advice, and trashed the systemuiserver pref file. It now works again. Time will tell how long.
