I wanted to install tiger on my mac mini a few days ago using my dead ibook install dvds and I got a message telling me I could not install it!! I guess they tie the discs to particular machines or something. Anyway I went and bought a normal copy of tiger and it installed just fine I got a fright cos I thought my mini was dodge when it didnt work before.

Do apple really fully customize the disks for each machine? Do they remove parts of the OS or just have a file to check the machine and the actual OS is the same on each install disk?

Its nice to use 10.4 again
sheesh, that took 8 hours for me to be asked to change my sig...

Install discs are locked to each model of machine, so that you can not install an OS X version that is earlier than what apple installed at the factory. And there are small but significant differences in the installers for portables vs. desktop models too
Signatures are ugly. Bitchy women are ugly......YOU do the math :)

Well, there must have been something odd about that because this hasn't been possible for System Restore discs since at least OS 9. You could quite easily get around the block with the OS 9 system restore discs though - you just had to locate the installer .img and open it manually . Is there a way to do this with the OS X discs? I know you can use FireWire Target Disk Mode to install onto another Mac or you can just install onto an external but that requires you to have the original machine still.

Such as? I would have thought it would make the most economic sense to make all the discs te same and just have some kind of machine check at the start of the install. Have apple ever tied each OS to a specific machine an not just model?

Such as the Touchpad, 2 finger scrolling, battery power mgmt, cpu cycling, sudden motion sensor ect ect. but these are only kernel extensions that are/are not installed. The (OS X) disks are all the same, they all have smart installers

IIRC, apple has not made machine-specific install disks, beyond the earlier-version check, at least not in recent years anyway,

If your desperate, you can install over firewire target mode. It works, but not recommended!

to start a mac in target mode, plug in the firewire cable into both macs and hold 'T' on startup on the one that you want to be used as a firewire drive.

to install, i think you can tell the installer to install on to it, or you install on the main drive and clone it onto the target mode mac.

I recently got a new G5 Imac, and have tried using the OSX 10.4.4 install disk on my G4 imac. After the initail run, which reboots the imac, I get only a grey screen, and the install/upgrade never proceeds.

Does anyone know if these disks are in fact tied to specific machines - such that the osx 10.4.4 disk that ships with a G5 will not work to upgrade a G4 ?? The CPUS are different, but no messages opf any knid indicate this may be an issue.....

Thx
