Hello.

I have a Powerbook G4 and my Intel Mac Mini just arrived. I've just recently gotten back into Macs, I've had my PBG4 for less than a month. I've seen from setting up my PBG4 that you can transfer settings from a previous Mac to use on your new Mac. What else does it transfer? Your home directory? Certain apps?

I am asking because I have seen on the forums that some people think this can end up slowing the new machine down and they end up doing clean installs anyway. So what have your experiences been?

Thanks.
Main Computer and EyeTV 200 DVR: Mac Mini Core Duo 1.66Ghz 2GB Ram 160GB HD.
Road Warrior: MacBook White 2.0Ghz Core 2 Duo 2GB Ram 80GB HD.
Kubuntu Book: Dell Lattitude C400 running Kubuntu Linux 6.06 1.33 Pentium 3 CPU 1GB RAM 40GB HD with Creative laptop speakers (it only has one speaker).

You can do a fresh install of OS X onto the new machine (some people have had bad luck with the preinstalled OS). The migration assistant copies pretty much everything -- users, home directories, applications, and any other folders on the hard disk.

I've got a new iMac on the way, and I was curious about this as well. Can you control what the migration assistant copies, or are you just better off copying files by hand? I think of moving to a new computer as a good excuse to do some spring cleaning in my home directory, so I might not want to move everything over.

If I do end up copying files by hand, one of the most important things is my keychain -- does anyone know where that's stored?

Actually, the answer to my keychain question is pretty obvious, if I would have looked: ~Library/Keychains. So I guess the real question is, can keychains be moved easily to another machine?

In a way, you can. You can tell it to copy settings, applications and certain users – or everything. However you cannot specify to exclude certain directories for instance.
I don't suffer from insanity, I enjoy every minute of it.

What do you mean by settings -- my system preferences, or say, application settings/preferences?
