A friend of mine came to me with a problem today, he accidently copied 3500 pic files onto his desktop. So the desktop is covered in files, but they can't be deleted. When trying to delete the files it says the file is a system file and in use, you click continue and get the spinning beach ball and the file is never deleted. He's using anohter account now, but would like to get this account back. Is there a file that contain all desktop data or some way to delete all these files? BTW, its 17" PB running Tiger.

Thanks,
Tim

You could use something like Force Delete, or you could try these two terminal commands:

cd ~/Desktop
mv *.jpg ~/.Trash

Why do I mv them to the Trash instead of rm'ing them, you ask? Because rm and the star (*) operator are a really deadly combination. One little typo there could erase a whole lot of stuff in your home folder that you didn't necessarily mean to delete. Moving them to the Trash can is much safer. If you'd rather not take my advice, though, you can type rm *.jpg. Be extremely careful if you decide to do this, though!

Ticking sound coming from a .pkg package? Don't let the .bom go off! Inspect it first with Pacifist. Macworld - five mice!

the terminal commands worked, thanks!

Had to use different cases to get them all:
*.jpg
*.JPG
*.tiff
*.TIFF

Probably could have just restarted, then whatever file was *hung up* would have been released.

What annoys me is that when the desktop is covered in too many files, it starts overlapping them, I know you can just go into the desktop folder and move/delete them from there, but there should be some sort of solution for the actual desktop, like a little arrow appearing saying more... or something.

Then when the 'more...' arrow is cliked, some fancy CI effect where the screen whoshes over to a second desktop with the extra files.

Sometimes I get the "file in use" message when the file is not really (or apparently) in use and the trash won't empty (adium file transfers and slideshows from the finder are champers on this). In most cases, chosing "Secure Empty Trash" works -although slow- fine.

Y no entienden nada... ¡y cómo se divierten!...

Why would that be? Was his file system formatted as case sensitive? That's odd.
