which version of OS X needs the OS 9.2.2 thing? beacuse i wanted to install panther on my iMac G3 and i didn't know which one needed it

No version of OSX needs OS 9.2.2. You boot off of the OSX install CD and then depending on your needs you select a type of install, e.g., clean, upgrade, archive and install, etc.


Edit
Almost forgot make sure that what ever version of OSX you buy, your Mac meets the minimum specifications (chip, memory, hard drive space)

Yeah, OS X doesn't need OS 9. You need to have OS 9 installed to run Classic (which allows you to run old OS 9 apps), but OS X works just fine on its own.
