.
I am running OSX 10.2.8 Jaguar. I just noticed that my desktop folder has disappeared from the list of folders in my HOME folder. Can anyone enlighten me as to what to do to get it back ??? It's strange, because it does not appear if I open my HOME folder in the finder but it does appear if I am moving a file using a contextual menu plug-in method. It's acting as if it is invisible yet I never made it invisible. Please advise my Mac brethren. Thanks. Peace out . .

Open Terminal, type ls -a and see if you see the Desktop folder. If it's still there, use a utility like File Buddy or the Terminal to ensure its invisibility flag is unchecked. Here is a guide to utilities that can toggle visibility.

You ROCK my Mac brother !!! I followed your guidance and downloaded "FileBuddy" then used it to find the Desktop folder and you were right. The invisible flag was checked. I unchecked it and all is good. Baffled as to how it became invisible in the first place though. Thanks for your help. Peace out . . .

I just had the same problem (I'm running 10.4.6). I have no idea why my desktop folder would have been marked invisible. I used File Buddy to change this, but surely there's a way to do it in the terminal?

Yes, there is a Terminal command, but it's not simple or easily remembered (for me at least).

I think you just change its name to add a dot (to make it invisible) or remove a dot (to make it invisible). To make a file invisible:
mv filename .filename

That is one way to do it, but the desktop certainly didn't have its name changed in this case.
