Hi,
I have a NuBUS Power Mac 6100 that has a -Sonnet G3- upgrade. I was wondering if anyone has had any luck installing a Linux distro on their Sonnet-upgraded Old-World PPC Macintosh and have it recognize and work with the G3/G4 upgrade.
I tried installing YellowDog Linux 2.3 on my machine and it both installs and runs, but -only- with the Sonnet G3 upgrade card disabled or uninstalled. And if i have the Sonnet G3 Extension (in the extensions folder) active, my machine crashes at boot and refuses to load Linux (upon loading Apple's MK Linux extension).... (also, BootX doesn't work with my Mac).
Any ideas? Linux, -without- the G3 upgrade is -painfully- slow but has all the up-to-date software I'll need and especially has the newer web browsers. Mac OS 9.x is fast, but out of date and I can't even view many websites correctly (either that or it crashes iCab or Internet Explorer 5.x).
Thanks.

Have you tried MKlinux ? You could also take a look at netbsd (haven't looked at those for a while).

no, i haven't but from what i've researched, that too won't work with a Sonnet-upgraded x100 series Macintosh...

Oh dear god... you're running a G1! We've moved beyond G5...
Anyway... I don't have one of these machines (nor anything remotely like it... my first PPC had PCI, and it was ditched many years ago), but here's my advice:
stick with YellowDog, as it is still actually Linux. MkLinux isn't really Linux... It runs on the mach microkernel (which is what OS X uses, actually). The point of sticking with YellowDog is that you can get the kernel source code and recompile it yourself. You'll need to make sure that you include compatibility in the kernel for everything you are using. My suspicion is that the kernel you are using doesn't have support for both a G3 *AND* Nubus. You'll need to compile the kernel with support for both of these enabled, as well as whatever else is in the machine. SCSI and ATA?
The OS 9 extension to enable the cache won't help you any, as the OS 9-based Linux bootloaders all wipe out the running OS to replace it with Linux. Whatever support the OS 9 extension gives you is likely gone.
But seriously... my iPod is a more powerful computer than the 6100... it will boot Linux and play mp4s. Why are you trying to use this thing anyway?

The main reason I'd like to use Linux on my 6100 is because i want to squeeze more life out of the machine...... yeah, i know, kind of like spurring a dead horse, trying to make it go faster... (or like moving Homer Simpson off the couch when he's out-cold).
I'm -NOT- a programmer, but i've used Linux before (Kubuntu and Ubuntu) on my PC... -JUST- for web browsing and word processing. I'd like for my 6100 to be able to do those things under Linux as well.
Yes, the 6100 is a G1....... but i've -upgraded- it with a -SONNET- G3 card....
Code:
Full Details:
MacOS 9.1
Power Macintosh 6100 @ 480 MHz (SONNET G3)
72 MB ram
4.5 GB HDD
2x Internal CD (stock)
10Mb/s Ethernet (AAUI->10Base-T adapted)
To verify my situation in a set of clear and separate equations....
Others who are stubborn hold-outs like me should find this helpful or at the very least clear up some..... 'confusion' (pardon the pun)
Sonnet G3 + PPC G1 NuBUS + (-ANY- PPC Old-world distro of linux) = (FAILURE/Crash at boot)
-BUT-
NewerTech G3 + PPC G1 NuBUS + (-ANY- PPC Old-world distro of linux) = (WILL install and run... with a lot of effort..... but -FAST!!!!-)
-HOWEVER-
PPC G1 NuBUS + (-ANY- PPC Old-world distro of linux) = (WILL install and run... SLOWLY)
In a perfect world, my dream setup for my 6100, would be a dual-booter..... Mac OS 9.1 on one partition and YellowDog Linux 2.3 on the other partition.
(as much as i like iCab for browsing on my already out-dated Mac, running a modern browser on Linux should provide a more -COMPATIBLE- browsing experience..... at a fraction of the cost to me)
Thanks for all your suggestions so far, guys! Very much appreciated!

It's from another thread. I was thinking about trying XFCE on my Pismo, since it won't be able to make use of most of the eye candy in the next release of Ubuntu.
