DVD technology is all different. DVD-R are the most "compatible", but that doesn't mean they're the best. iDVD 4 requires DVD-Rs to burn direct, for some unknown reason, so this may be a motivating factor.

The bottom line, however, is to make sure you are using high quality DVDs, such as Taiyo Yuden and the like made in Japan. Videohelp has an extensive database of user experiences with various brands, and how to find the good ones and avoid the bad ones. A bad DVD will 1) often not burn right, 2) often will not last even if it appears to burn right. DVD's, once burnt, suffer rot, it's only a matter of how soon. For example, I've mastered some of my kiddie videos on Taiyo Yuden, put them into a safe, and plan to remaster every few years so that my kids will enjoy them later in life.

Look up Playo brand (Staple's current "bargain"), you'll see that these are generally half-good (I'd avoid), as opposed to Hyundai which are bad! (very) You'll see also that some DVD-Rs of one brand are worse than the DVD+R's of the same brand as well as the inverse.
