I'm doing an erase & install of Tiger on one of our work computers (after backup!), and I want to change the name of the computer from that of the previous user (who no longer works for us) to a current user. Is there an obvious point in the process where this can be done?
Thanks in advance.

If you erase the hard disk prior to installing the OS (as opposed to an Archive and Install) you will be taken through the setup process immediately post-installation as though it was a brand new machine. You'll get a welcome to Tiger splash screen and some truly ghastly music before being invited to fill in your admin name, address, email, etc. Your (initial) account on this machine will be set up with this information. Don't forget you have the option to change the short name on setup, but not after. You can change the name of your account any time you like but not the short name.

Select the desired path and go to [Application] menu-->Services-->Finder-->Open
Enjoy!

If you are doing an erase and install - the name gets wiped out when you erase the HD.
If you are doing something else and just want to change the name of the computer - it is in the Sharing control panel

I fortunately just aquired a 2 day old iMac, is there any other way to change the name and short name besides erase and install. A relative purchased a 24in iMac and the next day decided it was to big and got a Mac mini instead and gave me a great discount since there was going to be a restocking fee from the store he purchased from.
I have a Tibook 800 and would like to transfer some files over, I know I can do it with out the initial set up, but I would still like to rename it and make it feel more like "mine" as opposed to someone elses.

Create a new Admin account with your username etc. Delete original account (having first backed up everything that you want to keep from it).

Thanks for the middle of the night help. Since it is brand new, I don't need to save anything that he did on, I don't think. I do question, since iLife '06 was preinstalled if there is a chance I will lose that program. It is not one the system disks it shiped with, or all the applications in a shared folder that won't be lost if I delete the original account?

In addition, the default iLife support files that are installed in any user directory will be replaced the next time you run the app if they are deleted. In other words, deleting a user account will have no effect on iLife apps.

Thanks for all your help. Now it is starting to feel a little more like my computer instead of someone else's.
