My hard drive (internal) keeps spinning down even though I have the checkbox clicked off for 'put hard disk to sleep when possible'

Is there anything else I can do?

I have the same problem, or had I think I have sorted its hard to tell sometimes.

Tinkertool available at macupdate.com has an option to stop harddrives from sleeping.

If you install the CHUD tools on the developer installer from your X DVD that has Harddrive spin down utility thing, although this failed to work for me.

I just downloaded TinkerTool and cannot find any function with regards to hard disk spinning at all. You must mean Cocktail.

Its weird, when I first got my iMac CD, it did the same thing. After a while though,it stopped ddoing it, as though it had only just realised it has been told not to spin the HD down. Since then I reformatted my iMac when preping it for Win XP, and again, the first 2-3 days, the HD would spin down, even though it was set not to. 2 weeks later, and its fine again, again as though it has only just 'seen' the command to not spin down the HD. So just give it a week or 2, and it might be fine...

Unless you're running a server, why not allow the drive to function normally by allowing it to spin down? Do you think you're seeing some performance gain by disallowing it?

I find this interesting... it is as if the system takes the energy saver preferences with a grain of salt. On mine (and others' as well), I have turned off the setting to reduce the brightness before sleep, but at any given time it might just do that anyway, even after just a couple of minutes idling.

Looking at the preferences in Terminal with pmset shows that it shouldn't be doing this, but it does. It makes me wonder who's really in charge!
