Okay. I'm having a hard time here. For some reason my computer has decided to "stick it to me" and will no longer act civilized. The problem? I can no longer click on anything on my desktop (or on any file in any of my drives) without somehow opening said item. I only click once, but every freakin' time it acts like I clicked twice. It's seems to be hyper sensitive and appears to double- (dare I say, even triple-) click at the drop of a hat. What's that you say? "Check your mouse sensitivity settings in the preference file and make it less sensitive." I tried that. No luck. It works appropriately only when I'm trying to adjust the settings. After I finish tweaking the settings, it goes back to spaz mode. At this point I can't move items on the desktop without either opening them or opening the folder they're going into to. Can anybody help me? I've got my head half in the oven ..... not really, but this truly sucks.

Uuuuggggggh.

Does it do this if you log in as another user? If not then something in your user prefs is borked.

Sounds like your mouse is dead.
My MacAlly iOptinet does this sometimes: takes one click as double click.
I recommend to try a different mouse.

My Logitech Traveller started doing the same thing, clicking about 7 times with a single press almost at random, replaced it and problem solved.

Did you accidentally install Windows XP?

Ticking sound coming from a .pkg package? Don't let the .bom go off! Inspect it first with Pacifist. Macworld - five mice!

For what is worth, my BTmicro mouse from MacAlly did something like that once, turning it off and on solved the problem.

Check System Preferences/Keyboard & Mouse and make sure double clicking speed is correct!

I think you missed the part where I said "turning it off and on solved the problem".

Thanks though for helping with a problem that I never really had

Thanks for the advice everyone. After reading these posts, I'm pretty sure my mouse is just D.O.A. I haven't made any serious changes to my computer (I'm operating OS X 10.3.9 on a battered 300 MHZ PowerPC G3) and the mouse seems to be jumping back and forth from a lucid, "everything's peachy" mode to a manic, "drown the kids and burn the house down mode" with no warning. It's one of those old, one-button, crusty apple-logo emblazed models that's probably logged a few thousand hours of service and owes me nothing. I'm going to replace it and see how it goes.

Thanks for the tips!
