However, after following the advise for updating, from the selected update listed,i have found that they will not install,it tells me to install, installer update, but then informs me that it does'nt require it.as ive installed the security patch listed!!! By the way the drive is greyed out,and it's driving me nuts!!1 Any help would be appreciated. Thanks guys

What patch are you trying to apply?
The current version of OSX is 10.4, a/k/a Tiger. You cannot download an update to upgraqde your system from 10.1 to 10.4. You need to purchase the OS.
All 10.x updates are paid and all 10.x.x updates are free and downloadable.

If it is a security patch, it is possible that one of the 10.1.x updates you installed already included the fixes. If it did, you won't have to install it again. If the date of the 10.1.x update you installed is after that of the security patch, this is the likely scenario. Personally, I would just have used Software Update to inform you which updates and patches were required. With that version of OS X, however, it is necessary to manually re-run Software Update after each install (and restart if it was required) to find any newer ones.
Btw, I'd recommend upgrading to 10.3 at least if you can. You should be able to get it very cheaply second hand. Be sure you have 512MB or more of RAM first, though.
