Coming out of lurk mode...

My office uses an eMac running 10.4.5 as its fax machine. It replaced a Dell GX260 running XP Pro, and has been far more stable. We also love the fact that the built-in fax software in 10.4.5 allows faxes to be emailed - a big plus for the person on fax watch for the week.

However, our office uses Mozilla Thunderbird to read mail (cross-platform uniformity and IMAP support being the big reasons). T'bird won't render PDF files natively in the applicaiton - you have to save the files or open them in an external app (Preview or Adobe Reader), which isn't working well for us.

Is there any way to change the output format of the faxes to JPG instead of PDF? That would be the ideal solution.

Thanks in advance!

It should be pretty easy to create an Automator workflow that automatically converts pdf files to jpg images and attach that action to the folder where your faxes are saved.

himself -

Would Automator be able to snag the file as it's coming in? The thing is: we need it to change format before the OS X fax service emails the fax, and I don't see how Automator can interrupt the process. It's worth a try, though.

Ideally, I'd like to change the default file format for the built-in fax service to JPG, so that it's JPG at initial save.

The main reason the file format needs to be JPG is due to my organization's use of Thunderbird in a heterogeneous environment (Windows and Mac). If we all used Macs (and in an ideal world, we would), Apple Mail could do the job without any problems.

And Mithras: 2 years, 6 months is a bit of a lurk, yeah.
