First of all: sorry if this is a double post. I've searched, but found nothing based on the keywords I've come up with.
Here's the problem (or visual inconvenience):
Since I switched on Filevault, three "Desktop" icons appear in the dialog boxes/sheets. They do not appear in the Finder, though. I've turned off Filevault, but they're still there. Here's a picture:
It's not a big thing, but I wonder how I can get rid of them. Also, the first and third one points to the real desktop, but the middle one doesn't seem to point to anything (no files or folders visible, nothing happens when trying to go to parent directory).
Best regards,
marcus

Have you tried dragging 2 of them out of the sidebar?

He's saying they're in the sheets but not the Finder. ursus, did you try dragging the Desktop out of the Finder's side bar and then adding it back in? I would try that, and if that does not help, I would restart.

Thanks for your replies!
I tried to drag the Desktop out of the Finder sidebar, and then adding it again but to no avail. Restarted in connection with 10.4.6 update, but the Desktop icons are still there in dialog boxes/sheets.
Well, it's not a big thing, although I'm curious as to where this information is stored and how to reset it. It does seem somewhat independet from the Finder sidebar.

Hmm... this is interesting.
Ok, when I look in Finder prefs, the "Desktop" checkbox is unchecked. So I return to the Finder window and drag Desktop out of the sidebar. Back in the prefs, I click the "Desktop" checkbox. A Desktop icon appears in the sidebar, but the checkbox stays unchecked. I click again, and it becomes checked and another Desktop icon appears in the sidebar. So, in order to check the Prefs' checkbox I have to click on it twice and, by doing so, two Desktop icons appear in the sidebar. They both correctly point to the Desktop.
If I, when two Desktop icons are present in the sidebar, uncheck the "Desktop" checkbox, only one of the Desktop icons disappear. I can manually remove the other one, though.
Ok, so let's have a look at the dialog box/sheet.
Now that I've removed and re-added the Desktop icons, there are two of them in the Finder sidebar. I open a dialog sheet and there's still three of them there, but one at the top and two at the bottom. If I then remove the Desktop icons from the Finder sidebar, the two at the bottom move up to their friend at the top. So, adding them in the sidebar makes them appear at the bottom of the sheet and removing them from the sidebar makes them move up to the top.
You have my permission to roll your eyes.

I used to have two desktop icons. I think the problem was related to an HD crash I had back when the G5 was new, but anyway - the magic file is ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.sidebarlists.plist. You can open this file with Property List Editor, which is part of the developer tools installation. The first bit is "systemitems", which is basically a list of every single disc you have ever mounted while a Finder window with a sidebar was open. Not the most useful information to store, perhaps. The second bit is "user items" which is where all your items - the lower half - is stored. Delete keys until you've removed all that you don't want.
Alternatively, you could just delete this file and log out and back in. That shoudl return the sidebar to its default. Save a copy on the Desktop or something just in case though.

Run an App that clears cache files and restores ... you may have a funky icon cache file.

make sure voiceover (etc) is off in universal access, in sys prefs...
(a longshot, just an idea...)

Thanks all for the tips!
I tried Tiger Cache Cleaner to, erm, clean the caches but to no avail. Finally resorted to deleting com.apple.sidebarlists.plist and after a logout-login, the sidebar in both Finder and dialog boxes/sheets was reset to default. So, now I'm happy again!
Thanks!
