I have no idea what I did but my computer now has a black Finder task bar and the entire dock and the icons on it are solarized. My screen saver shows normal when launching and then suddenly goes solarized too.

I did Disk Utility, have 10.4.6 updated, tried everything to no avail.
Help! - can any of this be APE affected ( I used Default Folder and Fruit menu but never had this issue.)

I'd really appreciate your help.

Did you check the Universal Access pref pane? Make sure it's not set to "black on white." Admittedly, that should affect the whole screen and not just the dock, but it's worth a shot.

I'm guessing he's referring to Universal Access' color inversion.

It's a photographic process.

As early as 1857 William L. Jackson noted that exposing a partially developed photographic plate to light, then continuing its development to completion, would sometimes cause a reversal of tones, rendering the whole or part of the negative image as a positive.

You must have selected the "White on black" in the Universal Access prefpane. Command-option-shift-8 toggles it so it's possible to do it accidentally (if you have the Universal Access keyboard shortcuts enabled in the Keyboard & Mouse prefpane).
