I have a g3 iBook that is curently runing on osx 10.2.8
and I was looking at Panther cd's on Ebay and I was wondering, does it matter if the cd's were originally part of an iBook g4 or iMac. and if I were to buy disks that wern't the general software update will it still work on my machine??

i think so, i think the mac os x 10.3 installer detects what system you have and installs the best system software for your machine.

You can't use iBook G4 or iMac cd's to install 10.3 or any other Mac OS on your iBook G3. You'll need normal (retail) Panther CD's.

I've never had trouble using non-retail discs on other models. I've done that (despite owning retail) because Panther came in retail on several CDs versus a single DVD that machines shipped with.

Some in-box disks check the model, some don't.

FWIW I just tried loading my Mini CDs on my laptop and it gave me an error about not being the correct machine. I've seen other posts about this and I've experienced this on my own more then once.

I've on occasion lose my OSX disc and I'll grab whatever is handy but the install discs that come with my machines never work on my other Macs. Just in case you were wonder - I'm legal, I purchase the family pack of OSX - its just that I don't need the disc except once in a blue moon and then I can't find it.

To answer the OP, if it were me, I'd not take a chance if the discs are not retail versions.

I know discs from eMacs work on all machines, and I know Power Mac discs don't. It sounds like Mini CDs don't work either.
