Hi
Is there a way I can format hard drives in HFS (not HFS+) in Tiger? The drives are going to be used in older Macs where HFS+ won't work. The option is no longer available in Disk Utility. Any ideas?

Suggestion: Format them on the Macs you're going to be using them on.
Alternatively, you could use the diskutil command-line tool to do this. Type 'man diskutil' in the Terminal for details.

First suggestion is not an option. I'll look into the second

Tiger's Disk Utility does still do HFS.
Chances are the disk you want to format as HFS is too big: HFS can only handle up to 2GB per partition. So if you want the whole disk to be contiguous and it is over 2GB, you must use HFS+. Otherwise, you'll have to partition it into a bunch of ≤2GB partitions.
Am I right that the disk is over 2GB? (And, if I might ask, what Macs are you going to be using this on? Only Mac OS 8.0 and older don't support HFS+.)

What Tooki said; if you're running a normal OS 9 mac you're fine. Also note that an OS 8.0 Mac can be updated to 8.1 via a free updater, available of Apple's website. To check system version click [Apple icon in upper-lefthand-corner] > About this Computer/Macintosh. If running OS X, click [Apple icon in upper-lefthand-corner] > About this Mac.

That's not 100% correct. Later versions of HFS (not HFS+) supported volume sizes of up to 2TB even before HFS+ was released. Of course, because there can be no more than 65535 blocks with the old HFS, every 1-byte-file would consume more than 30MB if you really used HFS on a 2TB disk. Still, it would be possible

Argh, yes, you are correct. I just have such vivid memories of having to partition a 4GB drive into two 2GB partitions back when 2GB was the hard limit. Does anyone remember which version of System 7 broke the 2GB limit?

Awesome, thanks. It's been so long since I dealt with those systems that the exact info is beginning to get fuzzy!
