Are there any free methods for installing OSX remotely for free? I would like to build a single image that I would span on a couple of my machines (I own the licenses of course).

Also, is there a way to deploy software?

All of this free of cost of course.

All of this without OSX Server which I've reserved but way beyond the scope of my little network Although I wouldn't mind serving up disk images off a nice XSan

Thanks!

Google for how to enable a regular OS X machine as a NetBoot server. Then you can set it up using NetRestore to roll out your image.

Alternatively, you can install a basic OS X on each machine and use Radmind to automatically roll out all the changes you make to one master machine.

Also, search the forums for NetRestore, there have been a few threads about it recently.

Radmind is free. It's got a big learning curve, but is quite nice once you get it working.

Ticking sound coming from a .pkg package? Don't let the .bom go off! Inspect it first with Pacifist. Macworld - five mice!
