OK so I am a recent Mac convert. Started with an iBook G4, now I have an Intel iMac...love the Mac OS. In retrospect don't know why I stuck with the buggy Windows platform all those years. But now I have a problem...what the heck do I do with my PC (Intel based Dell XPS notebook)?

I have partioned my iMac with Boot Camp to run Windows XP if I have to (I try not to, but I need to run some programs for work). But now I have a Dell laptop gathering dust. Then I got to thinking, if I can run both OSes on the Intel based Mac machines, why can't I run Mac's OS on my PC? I am not a computer scientist, so if anyone has a reasonably simple answer to this question I would much obliged. Thanks!

Can it be done: Yes
Has it been done: Yes
Is it legal: NO!

It can be done, but it is totally illegal to do so, the new intel macs have a chip in them that verifies they are actually macs, and not standard x86 pcs. PCs do not have this chip, so some hacking is required to get it to run.

Officially, Apple will not allow you to run OSX on non-Apple hardware. They want you to buy more Macs.

Unofficially, several people have gotten it working and redistributed the hacks to the world. Running OSX on non-Apple hardware violates the End User License Agreement, which may or may not be enforcable in your country.

Install one of the numerous Linux distributions that offers an OS X-like interface and look-and-feel on the XPS. It will be less clunky than Windows, it'll feel a lot like OS X and you'll be happier.

A better option in my opinion is to sell it on eBay. It is no hassle and you can make a good profit off a used PC. Plus think of the cash you get back to spend on other things or pay bills.
