What is the difference between the slider option "Put the computer to sleep when it is inactive for:" and the checkbox option "Put the hard disk(s) to sleep when possible"? It seems redundant.

The former will put your machine to sleep if it is untouched for the specified amount of time, whereas the latter will shut off your hard disk if it hasn't been accessed for a while.

They're not redundant at all.

I was under the impression that when the computer went to sleep, that included the hard disk also going to sleep. Is that not right? Just what all happens when the computer goes to sleep?

When the computer goes to sleep, everything goes to sleep, including the hard drive (except for RAM, obviously). However, it is possible for the hard drive to sleep without the computer going to sleep (just like it is possible for the monitor to sleep independently). The "Put hard disk(s) to sleep when possible" option, when checked, will sleep the hard drive in such a manner after a period of hard drive inactivity (I think 10 minutes?).

It is especially helpful in getting extra battery time in a laptop.
