I tried to update my computer using a set of Tiger CDs from ebay. The guy said it was unregistered, and would install on an iMac. The discs read for eMac machines, but being the trusting person I am, I tried to put them on my iMac 600 with 512 megs of ram.

The installer came up and told me I couldn't use this on my machine - big disappointment about not getting the program, and the wasted money, but what could I do? So I tried to exit the installer and I can't - I have tried everything I can think of (including unplugging the computer) and I cannot get out of the installer.

If I could just get the disk out, I could get back to OS 10.2 - but I get nothing.

Please someone help me get out of this Catch 22 - and I promise never to try to upgrade my OS again - I guess I am stuck at OS 10.2 forever

I managed to get the CD out using the option key.

Major disappointment - no tiger for me - but at least the computer is working again - so my heart has stopped pounding

Hold down your mouse button as you restart your compter. Keep it held down, and the install disk will pop right out, allowing your machine will boot in whatever OS you have installed on your hard disk. Alternatively, restart, and as soon as you hear the startup chime, hold down the alt key on your keyboard. You'll be presented with a screen with whatever choices of OS there are avaiable for you to boot from. Select whatever is on your hard disk, and away you go......

Thanks so much cms - I think the old pros on macs don't realize how upsetting it is to have something like that happen - although I am very computer literate on Windows, I am brand new to macs

Now to figure out how to upgrade this little machine without spending a fortune.

Technically, using an installer that was included with another machine is in violation of the license agreement. In other words, you're not supposed to do it, although it will work in some cases. Otherworld Computing has Tiger for $99. I suppose if you're really strapped for cash, you could get Panther for $48. It's significantly better than 10.2. But I'd recommend just biting the bullet and getting Tiger.

When I bought the discs, I had no idea they were for another machine - if I had known that, I never would have bought them. The seller lead me to believe that these were legal discs that I could install on my imac, and I would be able to register them and run a completely legal system.

Now that I know what the discs look like that are sent with machines, I will have an easier time buying the proper stuff when the time comes.

I'd ask for my money back if I were you.
