alright im a mac newbie (1st mac i got 1/18/06) and i've been pondering this question since i got my mac. what the heck is the difference between an alias and just making a duplicate?? (in OS 9)
an alias is just a shortcut, like a "frontdoor", to a file, or app (or whatever).
a dupe, well, is a copy, and a waste of resources, space...no need for, say, 2 copies of every app, or file.
aliases are the way to go...

And that is what you all are: inverted Nothings...with potential" (Sun Ra)
An alias is a reference to the same file — if you open the alias, you are actually opening the original file. If you create a duplicate, you're taking the contents of the original file at that time and putting them into a new file — the two files can then be edited separately.
