Hi all,

I am having some trouble with my late model eMac. In short; it was slowing down so i decided to do a re-install of tiger from the dvd. It got half way through the re-install and then said it had failed, my guess is the dvd was scratched. But now, when i start it up it flashes a mac face with a question mark over it a couple of times on the gray screen before the spinning thing appears, then boots normally into OSX.

I am now worried that i have totally messed up the system and will lose all the data on the disk when i least expect it. It lives with my parents, and i am only staying here for a few more days, and they know nothing about fixing computers, but need to use it daily.

It still functions fine and since the first reboot reports itself as 10.4.6 when the install dvd was for 10.4.0.

Any help on this would be really appreciated.

Harry/

NB: osx is the only os running on the machine, and there is only the one partition on the drive. It's a 1.25 with an 80gig drive.

Did you let the Tiger installer run a check on the installation DVD when you installed it? It will check to see that it is not damaged.

Sounds like your Mac is hunting for a bootable volume. Go to the Startup Disk in Systems Preferences and be sure to select your hard drive as the boot disk.

If you're worried then I would suggest reinstalling OS X and making sure the installer completes. It would also be a good idea to update it to 10.4.6.
