fairly new mac user here, just got on board when the intel imacs came out and that's what i'm using now. the seventeen inch with a supposed 160 gb hard drive. The big question that i would ask you guys is where does the hard drive space go?

Here's the story, last night i click get info on the hard drive and it says i have around 50 GB of free space, and that 92 GB of my hard drive is full. Seems that a couple days before that i had over 100 GB of free space. Now we've added about 17 GB of music but not 50 GB! When i get info on the size of my folders it compiles that

applications takes 4.71 gigs
family pictures tak 3.29
library takes 9.41
system takes 1.75
users takes 32.7

which adds to...51.86 GB taken space

subtract that from 148 GB useable and you get

96 GB useable space left over

someone on a forum at another site is losing disk space too and those users recommended using the program whatsize to figure it out so i downloaded it. It told me the same numbers as when i clicked "get info" and there don't sem to be any other files (deleted or anything) taking up a large amount of space. I thought dealing with crap like this was over once i switched from windows. Any help is certainly appreciated.

Do you have several users? You won't be able to see the stuff in others' home folders.

Yeah, Omni Disk Sweeper is loads better than WhatSize, which fails to find files I'm looking right at. (It believed my 4 GB music library was empty!)

turned out my brother had attempted to copy my music over (17 Gigs) and screwed up three times but the disk sweeper didn't notice it since it was in his profile (which still doesn't make sense) anyways i now have about 90 Gigs free space. thanks for the help though.
