I was curious as to how Mac OSX is able to support so many types of digital peripherals without the need of installing new drivers. Thanks!

It's also due to the fact that OS X's driver model (named IOKit) is far more advanced and elegant than the driver models found in other OSs. As a result, many devices can be used with generic, built-in drivers. The Mac was the first system to have plug-n-play functionality, so the OS functions this way by design.

The Mac adheres very strictly to the technical specifications for USB and FireWire devices. If the manufacturers who make these devices also adhere to the same specs, the devices just work. Those who require drivers for their devices were too damn lazy or stupid to follow the standards for USB/FireWire.
