disk utility can't verify my 2nd HD, says can't unmount it

everytime i try to verify my 2nd HD, it says unable to unmount it, is there another way i can verify/repair my hard drive?

i just recently bought a new HD, so now i have 2 in my powermac g5, everything works fine, but im not sure why its unable to unmount my 2nd HD when i go to perform a verify/repair on it. :/

I would guess you have a file open that is located on that drive.

Boot from the Tiger DVD and run Disk Utilility from the Installer menu.

I have this problem too, and have always had it. In early versions of disk utility, you could only verify disks with no files open. Since 10.4 (or was it 10.3?) you have been able to verify the boot disk (which always has files open) but Apple didn't extend this to other disks with files open. This is a problem if you have your users on your second disk, as you can never close all the files in your home folder.

The workround is to boot from the DVD. Let's hope Apple fixes it in 10.5.
