I have 10.4.6 on a 12" iBook G4 that won't automatically go to sleep. The power settings are set to automatically sleep at 30 minutes of inactivity, but sleep never happens unless I manually tell it to sleep, or close the lid.

NVRAM and PMU resets don't help at all. This happens whether using AC power or the battery, with no cables connected and the USB mouse turned off.

Is it possible that something on the Dashboard could count as "activity" and not allow the computer to go to sleep?

Happens to me once...

Have you tried to boot with the install cd(CD #1): Then repair disk & repair disk permissions with "Disk Utility".

After that boot the system in "safe boot" mode:
1. Shutdown
2. Press the "turn on" button
3. After the chime press "Shift" button
4. wait until the apple logo and release "Shift" button
5. log-on
6. after log-on restart your mac
7. shut down

After repairing disk, repairing permission & safe boot test your mac again.

see how it works...I'm curious....

I think there are some 'sleeping gremlins' with laptops.. My G4 1ghz 12" powerbook often appears not to go to sleep when I tell it to. But actually, for whatever reason, its just a huge delay. Maybe even a couple of minutes or more after i've told it to go to sleep, it will actually sleep.
A friend with an older G3 powerbook has had similar issues.
The worst thing about having a failing memory is..... no, it's gone.

Some software can prevent your Mac from going to sleep - if you use Veoh at all (which has a built-in BitTorrent client), your mac will never go to sleep unless you force it to. Recently, I have been having the same issue when leaving MPlayer open.

No love...still no automatic sleep. I booted to the install DVD, repaired the disk and permissions, rebooted in safe mode, then rebooted as normal. No dice.

I can live without it, as when I'm not working for a while I close the lid, but it's annoying to have part of OS X not work, when one is so used to it working.

My MacBook Pro would not go to sleep either. I just reselected the "Normal" setting in the Energy Saver system preference, and that seemed to fix it. Since then, I have been able to restore my custom settings with no recurrence of the problem.

My PB wouldn't go to sleep for a while recently. I discovered, however, in my case, it was because I had my desktop image rotating "every 5 seconds." I changed it to "every one hour" and now my PB goes to sleep.

Neither one of those ideas worked...I changed both the power adapter and battery selections to "normal" and even those settigns didn't result in an automatic nap.

It's not serious enough to warrant a reinstall so I'll have to live with it for now.

It's possible you have a 'wake on LAN' option enabled in your Sys prefs.

No, no "wake on LAN" checked.

But now I'm really curious, as it seems to have started working again! I sure wish I knew what I had changed in the last few days, besides turning on FileVault and installing PGP.

I was a bit too quick to post...it worked once, while on AC power...still no auto sleep on battery power.
