anyway, luckily I didn't lose much impt stuff. My main thing is how do I go abt putting back the old icon that the previous documents folder had?

That will happen automatically if you call the folder "Documents". Just log out and back in again. If you need the name to be localized paste the following line into Terminal after you created a "Documents" folder and press return (again you need to log out to see that it switched to the localized name):

touch ~/Documents/.localized

i recently helped a friend update to os x from os9.
moved all her work into Documents.
she was going to get an external drive, for backups.

her boyfriend opened a few windows, and saw 2 documents folders, identical.
so he deleted one...

basically, 2 views of the same folder, now gone.
