I installed Security Update 2006-003 on our main xServe G4 running 10.4.6 last night and after that everything went really bad!

After the restart the login window came up but I couldn't log in as any of the users (neither local admin, root or admins in OD). I also tried ssh but that wasn't started. A safe start didn't make any difference. When running >console in the login window the following message came up:

Code:
memberd[66]: Couldn't find root user. Sleeping and trying again
First I booted up using the CD and repaired the permissions. This had no effect so I tried to reset the password of both local admin and root but this didn't help either.

Therefore I suspected the local NetInfo database so I started up in Single user mode and recreated the database from a backup. That didn't help so I tried to force the system to rebuild the database as recommended by Apple by removing the database and the .AppleSetupDone file. This just ended up in the "Blue screen" and the Beach ball of death.

Has anyone experienced this problem? I would really appreciate any suggestion as I'm running out of ideas.

Have you actually tried scanning the disk? I don't mean Repair Permissions - I mean an actual disk scan. If the disk has directory problems, it could maybe cause something like that.

Ticking sound coming from a .pkg package? Don't let the .bom go off! Inspect it first with Pacifist. Macworld - five mice!

Yes, I have done this a number of times without any errors.

Now I have also mounted the server disk in FireWire Target mode and reinstalled the 10.4.6 combo Update and a fresh copy of the SU 2006-003. Without any luck.
