Hey Now,
Since installing Tiger I have not been able to restart or shutdown properly. I have installed updates up to 10.4.7 with no luck. I do not run Classic (don't have OS 9 loaded on the Mac). I can reboot but it always gives me a dialog box that my Mac has unexpectedly shutdown (then I get a choice to report it but nothing ever comes of that ). I have disconnected drives, peripherals, deleted some programs, just very general trouble shooting. I have had no luck .
I cannot even boot into the Tiger install disc. I was hoping to try and re-install onto another internal hard drive, but I cannot get the install disc to even boot up . Any help or suggestions would be much appreciated.

when you tried booting to the install disk, did you hold C?
to get it to boot to the disk, try
Holding C on startup (with disk in)
With disk in, go into sys. prefs. and select startup disk, and then the install disk.
hold alt on startup and try selecting the disc icon.
keep us posted.

There was an issue with SpeedTools, do you have by any chance Intech' SpeedTools installed?
The culprit was the startup item 'QuickBackStartupItem', you would have to delete it.

How did you install Tiger? Sounds like an upgrade, so you should at least try a replace and install.

I tried doing all that you suggested. I tried resetting the PRAM, but was unable to reset the PRAM.

I had read that in an earlier post and deleted all apps and files associated with Speedtools. No luck.
I did not have this problem before, but I have noticed that my Logitech keyboard doesn't seem to be working with Tiger when holding C down during startup. My original Apple keyboard has long since died. I borrowed my Dad's original Apple keyboard and was able to hold C down during startup and boot using the install disk (and reset the PRAM as well). I have re-installed Tiger onto another blank hard drive I had and have begun the process of transferring my data and files over to this hard drive.
Thanks for the response and suggestions. I am going to continue troubleshooting the other hard drive as well.

sometimes that happens with 3rd party keyboards.
i once (only once) used a microsoft keyboard which stopped me using the menu bar, reseting PRAM, and holding keys on startup.
