Both in Tiger 10.4.6 and 10.4.7, the screensaver does not stay on but goes off after about 5 minutes leaving a blank, black screen.
Nowhere in System Prefs is there a way to control how long the screensaver should stay on.
Any clue?
Thanks,

Thanks, Lee, but it didn't help: the screensaver stopped when it finished showing all the pictures in the "pictures" folder and the screen went blank, black

In the Energy Saver preference pane, adjust the slider labelled "Put the display to sleep when the computer is inactive for:"

As I indicated on my response to Lee, I'm using the built in screen saver, the one you build with images stored in the "pictures" folder.

Saltire,
I've tried it once with the slider down for the screensaver to start when the computer is idle 5 minutes. The result was, the screensaver stopped at the 10th image (out of a total of 42 in the "pictures" folder.)
Adjusting the slider up so that the computer is put to sleep when it is inactive for a longer time (say an hour), the screensaver seems not to stop, it showed all 42 images and restarted a new cycle.
But then, adjusting the slider to a longer time of inactivity is as beating the reason to have the screensaver go on as soon as possible so as not to burn the screen, which is the reason one wants to have a screensaver, or is it?
Thanks,

Thanks,
LCDs don't suffer from image burn-in. CRTs do.

You may want to try this...
Go to the Energy Saver control panel and click the "options" tab. Uncheck the "Automatically reduce the brightness of the display..." checkbox, if it is already checked.
