I purchsed system X v10.4 for mt G4 and the disc can't be read. Reboot holding down the C button doesn't work either.
Firmware has been updated.

Wild guess: Does your G4 not have a DVD drive? Because unless you went out of your way to get 10.4 on CDs, it's probably on a DVD.

Your thread title and the content don't match. Plus you give not nearly enough info to be of help to you.
What G4 do you exactly have? Do you want help with OS X or OS 9.1? Did you buy a retail copy of 10.4 or system discs belonging to another Mac?

maybe he means to say that his MT (MiniTower) G4 currently has Mac OS 9.1 installed on it but is trying to install 10.4.
I also think that his G4 model is the G4/350 or G4/400, which according to LowEndMac.com only includes a 32x max CD-ROM. DVD drives were only included for built to order units.
dpl2004: If that's the case, you'll need to get a DVD drive (usually an external Fire-Wire model) to install your copy of 10.4.
I found this one while researching your situtation: http://www.mcetech.com/dvdr8xdt-d.html
But if you don't like that option and don't intend on upgrading your machine's hardware, you can also check this CD solution from Apple Computer ( Mac OS X v10.4 "Tiger" Media Exchange). Click on "Media Exchange Program" on the right-hand side. You'll have to pay like $9.95 for it and give some proofs of purchase of the 10.4 DVD.

try starting up while holding P + R + (Apple) + (alt). wait for the startup chime to sound again, and then release the keys. then reboot, and try starting up with the disc in the drive and hold the c key. if you boot normaly, can you see the disc on the desktop? if you cant, you dont have a DVD drive, or the disc is damaged.
