I was troubleshooting my sister's iBook this afternoon (800mhz G4, 10.3.9) and renamed her home folder (she didn't like the one she had). I renamed it by opening the info dialogue, and changing the name in the 'name & extension' field. Seemed to work fine, I packed up and left, and tomorrow I leave the country.

Now she's called and she's lost all her preferences, library etc. The OS has defaulted back to the original home folder (changing the name created a new one, both are there on her hard drive) but she can no longer access her iPhoto, iTunes libraries, etc.

I'm sure this is going to be easy to fix (probably as easy as it was to break) but I need to get this right first time as she's driving down with it especially and I'm leaving the country tomorrow. I feel like a right idiot. Help me MacNNites.

Well, just change the new (now properly named) homefolder to something else, rename the original home folder from the name you gave it to the original and proper home folder name. Reboot. And everything will be back to normal.

You can not easily change the short user name (and therefore home folder name). Renaming the home folder is not sufficient as you found out. There is a utility that claims to be able to do it, but I have never tested it, and Apple has instructions online how to do it, but it is rather complicated and somewhat risky. It's easiest to get used to your existing short user name or create a brand new user and delete the old one.

Yes naughty me I shouldn't have gone barging in there thinking it would be that simple. Anyway, for once I actually found the right Apple article and it took around fifteen seconds to fix. Phew! And thanks.

It really is dumb though that Apple doesn't tell you what you are doing though when you change it, they should have a window pop up or something. I have seen that problem a million times here at MacNN.

Too true... it's generally expected of Apple that they would make it difficult, or even impossible, to something that destructive... or at the very least privide a clear warning. This current behaviour is suitable in the unix world (where the user is expected to know the consequences of their actions, and not be warned for everything), but not very Mac-like at all. Apple really needs to address this.
